Microsoft Is Blocking The Windows 10 May 2020 Update on Some Devices

Microsoft Is Blocking the Windows 10 May 2020 Update on lots of devices

Yes, this is true but you can still force the update to install.

Microsoft is preventing a large number of devices from updating to the Windows 10 May 2020 Update. While the software company released the update last week, Microsoft has quietly acknowledged that there are a number of known issues preventing the update from being installed on a variety of PCs.

Microsoft has a list of 10 issues it’s currently investigating, and 9 of them have resulted in a “compatibility hold” which stops the Windows 10 May 2020 Update from being installed via Windows Update. One issue involving unexpected errors or reboots with always-on, always-connected devices, affects devices like Microsoft’s Surface Pro 7 or Surface Laptop 3.

If you’ve been checking Windows Update for the May 2020 Update and not seeing anything, then it’s likely that your device is being blocked or throttled from updating. Microsoft has also added a warning to Windows Update over the weekend for devices that aren’t ready to be updated.

Windows Update warning.

Microsoft is also “slowly throttling up” the availability of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update through Windows Update, so the option might just not be appearing for many regardless of device and driver blocks.

The latest update is also being blocked on systems with apps or games that use the Game Input Redistributable. Microsoft doesn’t make it clear which apps and games use this, but the company has found that “affected apps or games might lose mouse input” with the May 2020 Update.

Windows Update isn’t the only way to get the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, though. You can also force it through Microsoft’s update assistant. The tool even bypasses the blocks that Microsoft has put in place for affected systems. It’s the only option for now since Update has flagged potential problems. Nevertheless, if your system has received the Update in the Windows Update under Windows Settings, then you are good to go. Out of many devices that has been tested, only few was successful.

Note: (Windows 10 only) For those who want to wait for the Update to come, there is more to do in other to receive the update:

1.   Make sure you don’t have any pending Update in your Windows Update. (Click the Start Button → Click Settings → On Windows Settings, Click Update & Security)

2.   Make sure you are using the last version of the Update (1909), if not you might need to install all the necessary updates to the last. Windows may tell you “You’re up to date”. So, run the Updates again and again and install them as they become available.

3.   Check your PC system information to be sure you are on version 1909. (Right Click the Start Button → Click on System, then check Windows Specifications)

4.   Your PC will need to be fully up to date (1909) before you are offered the latest version.

When this is done successfully, you should be offered the latest version 2004 almost immediately or later.
