Common Problems With The RAM Memory

Problems with Computer's main memory

The computer's main memory, also known as RAM (Random Access Memory) is the primary memory of the computer that stores data and

information, program instructions for the CPU (Central Processing Unit) to have quicker access when needed to perform tasks or an operation. It is a mechanism that stores data for use by a computer. A computer stores data, programs and information in form of binary codes such as 0 and 1 called bits into specific locations in memory and later fetches the values for use.

The computer's main memory is the brain of the computer and its capacity is usually quantified in terms of bytes, kilobytes, megabytes etc.

The RAM is responsible for the starting up of the computer and running of programs but the bad side is that it can be corrupted or damaged. The RAM wears out over time in the cause of usage.

Common problems and Symptoms of a bad RAM or about to fail RAM

1.        Beeping sounds from the PC and unable to start up.

2.        Windows crashes randomly (Blue screen of death or crash).

3.        VGA (Video Graphics Adapter) fails to respond or monitor/screen won't display.

4.        Slow performance even when the RAM is of higher capacity.

5.        Non responsive or slow response time to open or run programs though the RAM is higher.

6.        Corrupted data files and unable to open files.

7.        Incomplete booting until restart.

8.        Incomplete system RAM display such as 3.65Gb of RAM usable instead of 4.00Gb of RAM.

9.        Computer freezes and restarts after.

10.     Error messages from time to time.

Causes of RAM failure or bad RAM

1.        Overheated CPU or improper overclocking of CPU.

2.        Bad or problematic memory module or slot.

3.        Power problem.

4.        Running heavy or memory hugging programs frequently.

5.        RAM wears out.

Fixing RAM problems

1.        Run Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool to check if the RAM is ok or not.

2.        Remove RAM, wipe it and reconnect.

3.        Check for defective RAM slot if RAM is ok.

4.        Replace bad RAM.
